North American Oil Production (Thousand Barrels per Day)

Year North America is expected to be energy independent.

Barrels Per Day (in millions) produced by the United States

North America is on pace to be energy independent by the year 2020 which could have great implications in foreign policy, particularly in the United States. Energy is one of the largest trading resources across both borders. Policy that utilizes energy resources in all three countries combined, with the region’s refining capacity, makes it imperative to begin making decisions at the regional rather than at the national level.

Although Mexicans consume less than the global average, Americans consume 4.5 times and Canadians nearly 6 times as much. In absolute numbers, we in North America consume one-quarter of the world’s primary energy production, even though we make up less than 7 percent of the world’s population.
